Ubuntu and Android phones - great match?

My understanding is the the android OS is based on Linux.

If so, shouldn't Androids be particularly well suited for a person trying to be a super-cool Linux (Ubuntu) kinda dude?

I'd love to get off the Windows/Mac bandwagon.

So, is there any good news about Androids and Ubuntu?

I just bought a Samsung Fascinate (craigslist). Just learned how to root it (success!), get the wifi thing going, and clockwork... I think I'll stop there for now.
This was all done with Windows 7.
