Welcome to Android Central! Which phone do you have? Photos aren't actually located or saved to a gallery app--they're saved to the internal storage or microSD card on a directory. The system scans all directories for images, and populates the gallery's database with their thumbnails and location, so that the gallery can display them.

Your phone probably came with a Gallery app preinstalled--do the photos not show up there? Or you could install the Google Photos app from the Google Play Store. When you open the Google Photos app, swipe in from the left and tap Device Folders, and you should see your photos there.

If you use a file manager app like Total Commander, you can confirm that your photos are still there--they should be in a directory called /DCIM/Camera.
