Text characters being changed when received?

So, recently. I've been having a problem with receiving texts from my girlfriend. Sometimes when she texts me. Instead of getting like the whole text I get these weird characters. Or sometimes I'll get part of the text with the weird characters. And it's pretty frustrating because I always have to make her screenshot what she texted me. And recently, the problem has gotten even worse. Anyone have any advice for this?

What device do you have, and what device does she have?

Are both of you using regular SMS or some other app?
