I recently broke the screen on one of my phones leaving me with a black screen but still functioning phone. I know I have received text messages on to that phone because i could feel the vibrate of my phone. I now just put my sim card into my new phone, expecting the conversations to be there, but discovered the conversations weren't saved to my sim card but phone. As i said earlier there is no way of accessing my other phone since the screen is black but is there a way of recovering the messages by plugging in my phone and going in manually through a laptop.

If you happened to have USB debugging already enabled in developers mode you could try to use ADB to make a full backup of your device.

If not, as far as my knowledge, you won't be able to get your messages off your broken device.
