I am 77, and have trouble with the terrible voice quality on some phones.

Welcome to Android Central! It's not always up to the phone's hardware--it can also be dependent on the carrier, especially if you can use HD Voice (or VoLTE, which is Voice over LTE). HD Voice typically makes the call much clearer, although it usually requires both callers to have the service.

I can tell you that the Nexus 6P on T-Mobile using HD Voice/VoLTE makes the call crystal clear.
