How can I unlock my phone with Android Device Manager?

Thought the phone was lost so used ADM to lock the phone. When you do that it prompts you to set up a password to unlock the phone, and include a hint to the pw. DId all that, wrote down the pw - found the phone, put in the pw. I said it was incorrect. Got back on ADM, set up another pw and hint. Wrote that down. Tried it too - phone says that one is incorrect. I'm at a loss!

You can try entering the password wrong a few times and it should then prompt you for your Google credentials.

tried logging in with appropriate passwords but only have a few logins left. Don't want to keep trying the same thing hoping for a different result.
