integrating gmail calendar and phone

OK so I am fairly new to the world of Android.

I've been resisting GMAIL for a long time, but now I realize it might be useful for me to be able to access all of my email from one spot, and also, very useful if I can combine my calendar (which I don't USE at this point) to where I could add something on the web version of GMAIL and it shows up automatically in the phone.

Also, I don't "get" the GMAIL client vs the regular client. I cannot tell if it's checking for messages, nor if it's sending them.

Oh I am using an unrooted Verizon Fascinate.

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you are asking...

A huge part of why I went to android was that Gmail and it's calender and contacts sync so seamlessly... I do use the Gmail app.
