Why doesn't my phone unlock during phone calls?

Phone doesn't unlock during phone call

When my phone screen is locked/dark and I receive a phone call, it doesn't unlock the phone. So if I receive a call and need to check a text I receive I can't. The screen either returns to black or just remains on the call screen. No matter what buttons I push the screen is locked out.

I used to be able to stay on the call and back out of the call screen and check an email or respond to a text. I can't do this anymore.

Sorry for being so vague! I posted the above question. I wasn't logged in and this was supposed to go into the Galaxy 6s forum. That's the phone I have and I'm on Verizon!
