Only the bottom 1/2 of the screen will light up, why?

only the bottom 1/2 of the screen will light up

The screen only lights up on the bottom 1/2 of the screen. The phone works , but you cannot see the top 1/2 of the screen; the touch screen is still working. Phone cannot be used since you cannot see what you are "touching"
