I don't want the sender of a text to my phone to know I have received it

When I get a text message from someone it shows when I turn my phone on and its delivered to my phone. I don't want this to happen. Is there a setting that I can turn this off?

Unfortunately, that doesn't appear to be something that can be adjusted on your side. With Hangouts, you can set to request delivery notification but there's nothing to not send one when it's requested by the sender.
