Bluetooth audio skipping gets really bad when I'm in some locations

I use a BT headset to play music that I've previously downloaded to my phone (so it's on the device, not streaming), and the audio connection it's USUALLY pretty reliable but can get really bad sometimes so that it's skipping nearly every few seconds and makes listening nearly impossible.

I seem to notice that it's particularly bad at the gym. Would the presence of, say, 30 other people also using BT headsets while they work be the cause of the interference that seems particularly bad there? There are also a few intersections where it always seems to get worse. Is this normal, for certain environments/locations to cause problems with BT signal reliability, and if so how can I troubleshoot?
