Failed root process, how can i restore the tablet?

The tablets power button + volume up button is not accessing anything for me to try to factory reset it. It is my 5 year old sons tablet, and I'm in desperate need to fix it.

Are you holding the volume up button down before you are hitting the power button?

I've tried every different combination I could, and get no response. When I plug it in yo charge, it can't even get past the battery with the zigzag in it toblet you know that its xharging. I also can't get my computer to recognize that its plugged in.
