Rebooting a smartphone is a lot like rebooting a computer.

When you reboot a phone, the RAM is cleared, alongside any cached data that's stored in memory. This is useful as some apps or the phone may not run correctly after using it for a while without rebooting.

By restarting the device, the OS and apps are reloaded into the memory as a clean-slate and is a common fix for many annoying but minor issues.

These days, rebooting a smartphone isn't of paramount importance since many of them perform pretty darn well without rebooting anyway, but some phones like the recent Samsung Galaxy devices have an option to reboot the device automatically at a certain time of day.
