Can I use the S Pen on the Samsung Galaxy Tab A?

I recently purchased an S Pen for my Tab A. It does not work. My Tab didn't come with an S Pen. I was told after a week of research that it is possible to buy the S Pen separate from the Tab and it will still work. Can you help me?

It should work. If it doesn't, you may have a defective S Pen - did you purchase it through Samsung or an authorized retailer?
