When I am on a call on my phone, how do I take an incoming call?

When I am on a call on my phone

When I am talking with someone, the phone rings in and tells me who is calling. It has two options, put the person on hold or reject the call. Can I put the person I am speaking with on hold and take the incoming call or does it just go to voicemail?

I think the hold option means the person you're talking to. You haven't even answered the other call how can you put them on hold? They'd just be sitting there and the ringing would stop, what would they think? Hahaha.
