How do I get the little red notification numbers to show up on my icons?

Hey guys, I'm new to Android (kindof), and I just got a BLU Vivo XL with Lollipop 5.0. I've trying to figure out how to get the little red notification numbers to show up on my icons. I'm getting bombarded with notifications everywhere else except where I really want them the most. Is there a way to do that? Thanks in advance.

It depends on the app and on the launcher you use. Some launchers (not sure if the stock BLU one does or not) don't support app icon 'badges' while others (like Nova) do. But not only that, the app you want to use also needs to support badges. Most apps do, however, so that shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I'm running Nova Launcher, but it says I have to buy the Prime version to unlock that. Is that true?

Yes, you need the Prime version and the Tesla Unread plugin.
