I noticed some Lollipop (And 5.x) and Marshmallow (And 6.x) versions of Android OS have the Android button row where these used to be hard buttons... circle, square, triangle, house... basically back, task switcher, home. Is there a way to put in the menu button that we had on Android 2.x phones, and certain 4.x ones like the Galaxy s4? I'm aware that you can long press the task switcher button to mimic the menu button, but 1) this hasn't worked with all apps, 2) this may have changed over time, and 3) I'd like a dedicated menu button anyways.

Modern apps are supposed to have contextual menus (the 3-vertical dot buttons that are typically at the corner of a screen), or access to the Settings by swiping in from the side. This is one of the Material Design guidelines that Google strongly encourages to app developers. Is that still not preferable for you?

Try Button Savior Non Root, although I can't quite tell if it has a Menu button option.
