I'm thinking of buying a refurbished GSM phone on Amazon. I use
    straightalk on AT&T towers.

From the reviews, (if I should believe them) they seem to be in good condition
with very good screens. 90 day warranty.
Would anyone know if for some reason the phone is bad would Amazon
pay for return and offer refund?

I have been looking at the Nexus 5. Should I consider anything else of equal
or better performance. Prices are around the $150-$160 range.

I thought about ebay but with Amazon I think I might be a little safer.

    Open to your thoughts.

    Thanks,
    Ken

Ebay is just as safe, as long as you buy from a reputable seller, with many sales, and 99-100% rating. if you have a seller that has 100k+ sales, and its 98% on rating, that too is good. Refurbished phones are an ok option, if you want to save money. Just review the buyer's rating, and you should be ok.
