I downloaded facebook. and messenger .... both icons are now located at the top right of my screen next to the temperature.... everytime someone posts something or sends me a facebook message, it beeps and then puts a # next to the facebook icon. I can't seem to get these icons to close, or move... is it costing me data since they are located there and actually keeping track of all the messages/posts that come on facebook???

Every time something downloads to them it's costing you data (or wifi). Just long-press an icon and you should get a "remove" type of item in the menu. (The app itself, though, is probably still running. If you want it to stop accepting data, uninstall it. You can't both have it and not have it, and if you have it, and data is sent to it, it's going to accept it.)

So just signing out of facebook will not stop it from using my data?

Signing out and stopping both apps from running should stop the data use.

Welcome to Android Central! You could also Restrict Background Data for that app. Go to Settings>Data Usage, select Facebook, and the select the Restrict Background Data option. When Facebook is not in the foreground (i.e., you're not actively using it), this will prevent it from using mobile data to refresh while it's paused in the background.
