How to securely delink and wipe android phone

Hello,

I have just checked which devices are currently registered to my google account and was concerned to see that my old S7, which I sold, is still linked the my google account and has been synced recently. I have obviously now removed the device from my account and changed passwords.

When selling the phone I removed and signed out of my google account and 'zeroed' any unused memory and then performed a factory reset. When I actually sold the phone I went through the startup process with the buyer.

Firstly, how did the phone remain linked? Secondly, how should I prevent this from happening again when I sell a phone?

srkmagnus, thank you for the link. That is the process I followed, which is why I am miffed as to why the device was still linked to my account and regularly syncing. The device is still showing, so I have just changed my password. Maybe it was some strange anomaly and google was mistaking it for the device I am using now.
