Trying New Phone Before Activation

My LG G5 RS988 finally arrived in the mail. Is it possible to try out the phone before I go to MetroPCS and have them activate it? I want to try out a couple things (mostly test the audio quality/levels) before I commit to the phone. I'm not sure it's returnable once activated. And once Metro activates it, I'm not sure they'd even allow me to switch phones without waiting the three months (they allow you to switch phones ever three months).

If you didn't buy the phone directly from a carrier, you should be able to set it up without a SIM card. You just won't be able to make or receive calls or texts, but you could certainly use it as a wi-fi device.

If you set up a Google Voice number, you can use Hangouts (with the Hangouts Dialer) yo make and receive (on your GV number) phone calls on wifi. (All are free.)

You could also use Skype to test both audio and video calls (also free).
