I broke my galaxy grand prime, so I got a new phone, a Galaxy j3. It's been great, except that a lot of my contacts from my old phone don't show up on my j3. I can't access my prime because my screen is broken, and a lot of my contacts are saved on there instead of the sim card. I'm stumped and I really need help on how to get those contacts back.

Welcome to Android Central! Do you remember if they were saved to the local Phone account only? Those contacts don't sync anywhere, and you can't easily transfer them as a file, since they're saved to an SQLite database file in a protected system directory. This is why it's usually best to save your contacts to your Google account when you first enter them -- then they immediately sync to your Google account in the cloud.

if you synced the contacts, from the broken phone to your Google account..
Then you can recover them in the new phone, use steps on this link https://support.google.com/contacts/.../7199294?hl=en

if this method fails, no worries other members will help with other ways

Go fort with the steps if you didn't synced the contacts
they won't get restored. Also pull out the SIM card
from the old phone and installed on the New-1

The contacts are saved on the Sim card..
Is worthy a try on - Good Luck

I merged your duplicate threads. Sam_Gs7's idea of seeing if the contacts are on the SIM card is your best bet, although most Phone Account contacts won't be saved to the SIM by default -- I believe you have to manually export contacts to the SIM card. Otherwise, you'd have to get the screen replaced if the contacts are really important to retrieve. Sorry!

Did you already check to see if the contacts were saved to your Samsung account?
