    I love the idea of organising my photos using Google photos into albums but with so many pictures I can't tell which pics are already in an album and which are only in my main stream.

    The "album" is the last folder name in the path in which the file of the picture is in. So if you cave a photo in DCIM/Camera/2017/Christmas, it's going to be in an album named Christmas. (Which can lead to confusion, because pictures in an album DCIM/Camera/2016/Christmas will also be in an album named Christmas - a different album with different pictures.

    Create folders that make sense to you (there's no general rule, except that they should all start at DCIM for consistency) and put pictures into whichever folder they should be in (according to the way you think) - using a file manager.
