I've had photos of unknown origin end up in my google photos on my phone. Does anyone know how that could happen? I don't have any messages with same dates and times. So, I don't believe they came from a message sent to me. I am on Instagram. Don't have Facebook or messenger.

Those only come from either synced folders, linked devices, or if you have a shared folder, if another user added pictures to said folder (but those should have the 'shared by .... ' legend).

Check the folders you're syncing to your Photos account and if any other devices are linked to it. Also check if you have the option to show Drive media in Photos.

Welcome to Android Central! They might also be cached images used by other apps. If those app developers forget to add a file called ".nomedia" to the app's cached image directory, the images will get added to the main gallery database, and therefore show up as if they were your own images.
