How To Preserve Data On Old SD Back Into Reset Phone?

My son got locked out of his Telstra Superior Android Smartphone.

The lady in the shop took out the cards and did a factory reset.

Now he puts the card back in and the machine asks him what he wants to do with it and it sounds like either way it is going to destroy all the existing data.

The choices are something about 'external' or 'internal storage'. Something like that.

What should he choose to keep the data?

If he loses the data either way is there some other way to get the data off an SD card?

We tried to look at it in win10 on the pc but win10 said it needed formatting.

If you format it will wipe it clean, if you choose internal it will end in tears also. Was that card encrypted? Also, was it used as internal memory? If yes, the data is gone.
Try it on another device maybe?

The question I have is if the phone is offering to format the card as portable storage, or if it's just asking if you want to use the card as portable storage. If it's the latter, then I suspect it won't format. If you said you wanted to use it as Internal Storage, then it would have to format the card, since Adoptable Storage requires the card to be specially formatted and encrypted.
