How can I prevent a system update on my LG Aristo 3?

Hey guys, new member here. I was advised to post this question here.

Basically I just upgraded to a new phone, LG Aristo 3, from the LG Optimus L70. One of the perks of the Optimus was that I was able to disable system updates early on from when I got the phone. Truth be told that's why I stuck with LGs instead of trying out Samsung smarthphones when it came to upgrade. Anyway Ive done the usual of taking auto app updates off and (I thought) system updates too but I received a notification today that a system update was available and that I would only be able to postpone until the 24th and after that the update would happen automatically. My carrier is MetroPCS and I'm running Android 8.1. Will it be possible to put off the system update indefinitely or am I out of luck?

Carriers can try to lock down the ability to prevent updates. I don't have that phone, but I do have the LG V20. In my app manager, there's two "System Updates" apps. One I can disable, and the other will not. The one I can't disable is what checks for OTA updates, but I can force close it. So I'd double check in your app manager to see if you can do the same (will likely need to select the menu option to show system apps).

In my case, I can force close the one System Updates app, which takes away the pending update notification. It will stay closed until I restart the phone, so it's a minor annoyance. TMO may have changed up things to prevent this from working on yours, so I can't promise this will work.

If you root the phone, you can freeze the OTA update app(s), and not be bothered with updates. (Of course, that means that you don't get security patches either - they're contained in updates. Which is why you should keep the phone updated.)

Do you not have an option for "application manager?" If not, try looking inside the Apps and Notifications option. The screenshots you posted look to be from the general settings menu, and you'll need to explore through that to find the actual app list.

I looked around and didn't see anything labeled "application manager" or something similar. Here's what I have for apps and notifications.

Upon closer inspection I came across these. Would I be on the right track here or not?

Was that notice there when you tried to force close the Software Update app? If so, did it cause the notice to do away and then came back on its own?

I'd also go back to the Software Update in your app info settings and see if the force stop option is available again (meaning it restarted itself). If so, try closing it again and see if the notice goes away. If you already dismissed the notice, then try the force close option the next time instead of dismissing the notice. If that isn't working, then I'd check through your app info screen for other apps with similar names, including viewing system apps, and try force closing them to find the culprit.

I use Adguard, it has a firewall and it's own VPN in the device. The firewall can block connections on an app by app basis..

"Was that notice there when you tried to force close the Software Update app?"

Yesterday it wasn't. I had dismissed it before posting on here. Today when I saw the notification again I decided to take a screenshot before diamissing it. It didn't occur to me to leave it there for testing purposes.

"If so, did it cause the notice to do away and then came back on its own?"

I'll have to test that out tomorrow since Im sure I'll get another notification.

"I'd also go back to the Software Update in your app info settings and see if the force stop option is available again (meaning it restarted itself). "

The force stop option is still unavailable.

"If that isn't working, then I'd check through your app info screen for other apps with similar names, including viewing system apps, and try force closing them to find the culprit."

Software update was inside the app info options to "show system". Can't randomly force stopping apps mess with the phone system? Or am I just overestimating the risk?

It can cause some issues, but nothing major. The OS will restart an app if needed in most cases (so I guess my system update app is never needed? Lol), and a restart will set things to normal in a worst case scenario. Even still, you do want to be somewhat methodical so you don't have to try so many apps. For example, the Flash Player app has nothing to do with system updates, so no need to force close it.

I searched around and these are the only options available relating to any updates. When I receive the notification tomorrow I'll put them all to the test and post what happens on here. Thanks again for all the help so far guys!

Alright, so the notice appeared again. I didn't dismiss it this time and went through all apps and force stopping and/or disabling everything I saw might be relevant to my issue. I ended up resetting a bunch of settings to default but no luck on making the system update notification icon disappearing, it's still there. Maybe they just made it impossible to get around that on this model?

Dang, I'm out of ideas then. On my wife's old S7, she was able to simply ignore the notification. It stayed permanently, but it never updated as long as she didn't respond to it, which was surprising. You may get lucky as well.

Thanks Mooncatt, I hope I do get lucky. My main reason for not wanting these updates in the first place is because of the space they hog up on your phone. This one will be 500 MB which by itself itsnt bad but I dont know if it'll make any cosmetic changes which will make the user interface more of a pain to navigate or mess with any other setting or files. Plus as soon as the lovely employees at T-Mobile cook up another update that'll be another 500 MB most likely. Over time that will add up. I checked out Tim1954's suggestion on AdGuard but since it doesn't seem to be an app issue (possibly) it doesnt seem like it would fix this issue. Maybe I'll look into finding out how to root this phone if the update does end up forcing itself on me.
