I love my Note 8, but between me and it's previous owner, it's more than 2 years old, which means the battery will probably need to be looked at at some point. If this was a OG Note, I'd shrug, drop 15 on Amazon for a new battery and pop the back off. But it's not, and I understand that it can cost a bit for a proper replacement including taking into account the water resistance. So I'm just wondering what to do, since I do have some extra month from my lockdown time from Covid.

Depends if you plan on buying a Note 20 this year or Note 30 next year.

If you plan on buying a Note 9 and keeping it for a while then you should go for the Note 9.

I have both the Note 8 and Note 9 and I bought a note 9 earlier this year w/the intention of keeping it a couple more years.

imo, it would not be much of an upgrade. I think you would be better off getting the 10 in another month or so when the 20 is announced. that is when prices will start falling faster for used phones.

I agree! Note 10's will be at a discounted price once the 20's come out/get announced. That would be a greater time to buy and save some coin!

Anyone know how much the average proper replacement cost of a Note 8 battery is?

Problem in buying the 10... only one more year of OS Updates, you'll get security for probably another year or so. With the Note 9 I have, I'm done with scheduled OS Updates in a few months and will get security for a while after. THIS IS WHAT MANY OF US ANDROID FOLKS ARE SAYING... hey Sammy? Only two years of OS Updates on your expensive phones? This is preposterous!

Now, I've been told that some places don't redo the water-resistance seal or the like well, so that costs more money then. I'm guessing Ubreakifixit, from what I understand, does their job very well? Cause I can do 75 bucks.

UbreakIfix tests the phone for water resistance and other diagnostic tests after repair.

My mum has 2 Note 8s and recently bought the Note 9 brand new for £500. I really don't like the 8 at all, but the Note 9 is really nice. It feels like an upgrade to the 8 and is buttery smooth. I would recommend getting the 9.

I'm very happy with my Note 9 as I was with the 8+ before it, nor have I seen any compelling reason why I might want to downgrade to the new 20.

If you really value the notification LED on your Note 9, then you may want to stick to it for a bit longer.

If not, the 20 will probably be an upgrade in just about every way I think.

I value the headphone jack. Also the Note 9 doesn't have a notch.

A Note 8 will should get one more year of quarterly security Updates. Samsung has started offering quarterly security upates for flagship phones after 3 years. My Wife's S7 recieved quarterly upates in her 4th year. I understand other phones have received quarterly updates after their 3 years of security updates.

If you want 3 major updates buy a Pixel. Personally I prefer Samsung phone and have no problem with their 2 major updates and 3 years of security updates.

So doesn't this mean that Samsung flagships technically get longer support than Pixels after all?

Samsung: 4 years of security updates, 2 years of OS updates

Pixel: 3 years of security updates, 3 years of OS updates

    Did I get it right?

No... Sammy updates... OS... two years, Security... three years. Samsung never said anything about promising four years of security updates.

Gave my note 8+ to my SIL.
Heard there was a update out for it..
She has no interest at home.
Told her to take it to Verizon for the update..
    She said Nah.
    Ain't worth her time.
