I think they're already competitive, just not in the high end category by choice. Their phones consistently rate high in value & performance in the mid to low end segments. I believe this is exactly where they want to be.

Moto/Lenovo's biggest problem for a while has been their abysmal support. It sounds like they've made a couple of baby steps this past year or so in terms of commitment to updates, but it's still well below the standard set by Google and Samsung.

At one time Lenovo (Motorola's Parent Company) was one of the largest smartphone companies, but they have been slowly declining. I think they had a good strategy in the US a few years ago, but had a hard time executing. One challenge was their almost exclusive deals with Verizon for their high end phones. We had two higher end Moto phones in our family. We still do and my daughter still uses her Moto mods. I agree they have a good opportunity, but lost a lot by not being in the higher end market when LG left the market.

I fully agree, but I think they lost a lot of credibility with the Razor. An Expensive phone (at first)with very average specs. Plus tons of HW issues that really did not improve much with an update. They way over promised and really underdelivered.

From the reviews I have read, even Moto's lower end phones are not keeping up with the competition.

I got it made with the back, metal and glass in the design that I wanted, and it was unlocked for any carrier. However, it was very slow to get any new Android version or even security updates. I expected more from an unlocked phone. Then I had to send it back because it overheated and the motherboard was fried. When I got it back, the refurbished device they sent me was unusable because they sent it to me without removing previous owner's Google account before doing FDR. I sent back the refurbished device, they sent me another, butI had it for less than a year, and it was overheating again. I decided not to stay with Moto after all that.

I was disappointed because I really liked a lot of Moto's features like the gestures, etc. that were unique to their devices. If Moto were to get better with updates and quality control, I'd definitely be interested again.

I've used Motorola once the G4 plus and liked it but in US software updates were bad.

The Moto X Pure Edition was my first "real" jumbo sized (for the time lol) Android flagship... and I also loved it. It had so many cutting edge features, I just couldn't get enough of them. It was just plain cool to use That phone hooked me on Moto, and even though the software support sucks, I still pick up Moto phones on sale or clearance. I'm currently using a Moto Z3 play on a back up line... and have the projector mod, Amazon speaker mod, and battery mod for it. It was well worth the clearance price I paid for everything And my wife loves her glitter pink G6, which has ran awesome for her for years now.

I just got out my Moto X Pure tonight to sync my old Fitbit to it.. it's still working great, but technology has left it behind, it's no longer usable because of the lack of VoLTE support. I agree if Lenovo turned up the software support and quality control, they could grab a nice chunk of the market share that LG and HTC left behind. There's a lot of Moto fans that would come back and pay a fair price for well supported, well built and designed phones.

Come to think of it, I was actually really interested in the Moto Play line and almost jumped on board when my friend and Pastor was rocking one! I'm pretty sure I had my Honor 8 at the time so I didn't like the Play enough to switch!

You don't know what you missed Lot's of very cool and unique features only on the Moto line I have to admit I've had the most phone fun on my Moto phones But I've also had the worst software support... that's why I switched to pixels.

Moto's are kinda like a starter phone for pixels... once you use the mostly stock Android experience on a Moto, you think "I sure do like this experience, I wish the software support was better though. Hey, why don't I try a pixel?".... and you never look back lol.

I had motos for years, always like their build quality. After Lenovo purchased Moto Mobility from Google, the OS updates fell flat. Might get one very late, lucky to get two; not sure I ever saw three.
If Lenovo upped their anti in OS and security updates, and released either of those earlier noted two phones, they could give Sammy a run for their money. But, will they?
