I was going to post this in the Pixel 6 forum but I would have had to change my name again, and move into hiding. (However, if a mod thinks it is better in the Pixel 6 forum, please feel free.)

Pixel 6 Shows Brand & Performance Aren't Enough For Carrier Customers

I wouldn't say 3rd place is terrible for a flagship device. I also feel that only Verizon is promoting Pixel 6 in stores because their employees are more familiar with the Pixel brand. The other carriers haven't sold the brand as long a time as Verizon has.

I don't have a Pixel, but if I were to get one it would be unlocked from Google, rather than from carriers. However, I think that Pixel will catch on in carrier stores other than Verizon as it becomes more familiar in future iterations.

Been a few years since I was in the phone selling game but Samsung literally bought their dominance in carrier stores. They have employees that go to stores to promote and train staff to push Samsung products in exchange for free hardware and everyone got bonus commission for selling Samsung.

Why would an employee that makes their living off commission recommend products that pay less commission? It's the reason HTC and LG sales plummeted and I can easily speculate it's why Google hasn't gained much traction in carrier stores.

Third place is not bad; although, up until the Oneplus 10 was released a few weeks ago, not many out there for true flagship competition and looking at the specs on the OnePlus, still looks like not much competition.

But is Apple really competition for android? Two uniquely different operating systems. Other than reading an article that young kids go to iPhone (or bug their parents for an iPhone) due to peer pressure.

As for purchasing? My current Pixel 4XL was from Amazon, the Samsung I ordered yesterday is from Samsung.

Good point. And a good reason for everyone to be knowledgeable in what they want to purchase before seeing a salesperson. Another is most sales people know less about a product they sell than the customer.

    Interesting article:

Not all customers. Most have no clue what they want or need.

I agree. Third place is pretty good. Plus, Tensor is brand-new. I think that, combined with third place amongst phones with well-known and fully-functional processors, is pretty good.

I don't think tensor is a factor at all, most people buying a phone from a carrier shop won't have any idea what processor is in their phone or what difference it makes.

But realistically, third place behind the iPhone and Samsung is the best that they could expect.

The flip side of that coin though, is that, especially in the US, third place isn't that much of an achievement, because what else is there to compete with?

I do see your point. Some consumers don't look at things like processors or new software. They just go for what looks good or what is newest or "best". There are certainly lots of variables to consider when it comes to purchasing a phone.

Over the last few weeks, here in the UK, Google have really been flooding the main TV commercial channels with Pixel 6 advertisements. Could be a sign of desperation?

I'm not sure it's desperation. It's not like they rely on phone sales to stay afloat. Probably a sign of poor sales and trying to sell off overstock.

If they weren't selling services, that would be desperation. This is more...party money.

I think third place is pretty good considering they have so few phones models available. Unless Google wants to greatly expand their HW business I think they should be pretty happy with 3rd.

Maybe I missed the post but did anyone consider that knowledge of all the 6's (bugs) has reached the masses? Sure, many have had a good experience but I think you would be hard pressed to find any phone on the market that has more reported "serious" bugs than the Pixel 6's!

It's hard to say but, there's no doubt, the Pixel 6 has many more complaints than the Pixel 5 ever did.

It does seem like the new Samsungs are having their share of overheating and different connection problems too... more so than normal for them. I wonder if that's because they share some parts with the pixel 6 line, or maybe just quality control issues because of the chips/materials/labor shortages? Don't they have a production plant in the U.S.?

It also depends what chip for Samsung having those issues like international Samsung Exynos chip i believe is in Pixel 6 but could also be do what you said, chip/manufacturing/availability etc..
