The photosphere attempts I've made aren't nearly that good.

I had the same problem initially. Don't rotate your arms at the shoulder or elbow, it changes the perspective too much. Instead, hold the phone closer to you and rotate the phone while keeping it otherwise stationary (i.e. don't turn your body or arms in any manner while holding it). The more foreground objects you have in the shot, the more strict you have to be on the camera's perspective in each shot.
