I appologize for what is probably another silly question, but being new to smart phones, Is there any advantage to having a 4G phone that only has 3G service in the area? Would it be any faster than a 3G phone?

Not that I know of. If you keep it in 3g mode over 4g the battery life will be good since the 4g takes more power and the batteries in the 4g phones are usually bigger but not always.

Most carrier locked devices don't have a 3G/4G toggle. And with those devices the benefit of an LTE device over CDMA/HSPA+ is nil. You may get a little better battery life but it won't be that noticeable, since LTE battery drain happens mostly when it's connected to the LTE network and data is traveling via LTE. A borderline dormant LTE radio in a phone won't change much as far as battery is concerned.
