there was a story about an android phone coming out that used a different gps than the default. i believe it was androidcentral but it may have been another site.

the blogger got upset about this until it was clarified that the newer gps was to be used in conjunction with the droid's. it was a different system that relied on augmented signals from wi-fi, iirc. i can't recall exactly, but ultimately it's functionality was especially useful in big city areas like new york city where standard gps loses accuracy.

does anyone recall this event? it was several months ago and it was a big deal that hit many android sites.

Don't think I've heard anything like that, but I do know that the "Coarse Location" system in Android will triangulate with 2G/3G towers and WiFi networks to get a decent lock on where you are. It works pretty well in big cities, but where I live it usually knows where I am... within a 1km radius. :p
