SMS not sending

I have a Samsung Galaxy Ace 3 S7272 mobile phone and when i try to send
a long SMS, a message appears saying 'Mobile data is disabled, the message
will be send when mobile data is on' and is not sending it. I have Mobile data off to cut the expensive internet connections. Why is doing this and what should i do to fix it?

Text/SMS/MMS needs a data connection.

After so many characters it converts to mms I believe. I send regular texts all day with data and WiFi turned off.
