Is it safe to assume when the comments are turned off it's a sponsored post? I wish they were better identified. For example, I glanced at the best phone on T-Mobile and it's hard to tell, same with the gift guide.

Not always. When it's a post about a store item or a sale on AC, that's usually closed to comments. I'm not sure why the guift guides are closed, to be honest. They're not sponsored posts, honest! They're compilations of authors' preferred devices.
