Factory Data Reset

I'm just getting into supporting phones as an IT guy, and that's a portion of why I've come here to ask questions about my own phone.

Something I need to learn and understand: how much is left behind when you do a "factory data reset" using the option installed in the OS?

I have been trained from long ago that nothing is ever erased from a hard drive, unless you follow certain steps to make it statistically unrecoverable (utilities like DBAN, for example). But phones with a ROM are a new beast to me.

What exactly is gone when I reset my phone, and what is there that could be recovered when I donate/sell my handset and move to a new one, or I have to answer that question for a user upgrading at work?

Welcome to the forums. :)

I'm not an expert on these things but I believe that everything is retrievable after a reset. I believe also that you have to overwrite with worthless files to erase your data. But you probably know far more about these things than I do. :)
