I was using the stock SMS app but based on how many folks here like Google Messenger I decided to give it a go. So far, so good.

I used Google messenger on my xperia z2. I now have an s7 edge and was going to download Google messenger again but so far I have stock with the stock messenger app. It's not bad and looks decent.

I'm a big fan of Next SMS (formally Handcent). It's easy to customize; however, does take up some memory. I also like Chomp, but it has intrusive ads which I hate. Just when you're about to reply to a text, an ad takes it's place! Next SMS does have ads, but only in the settings and they are not intrusive.

I was using Hangouts for a while but recently switched to Google Messenger. I like it better.

I am probably the small minority on this one, but I don't understand Hangouts at all lol.
I prefer the stock sms app. Although on my LG Stylo, I do good to receive any of my texts! ๐Ÿ˜’
I did like Chomp too tho

Normally I wouldn't admit it but I have gotten use to the Verizon Messages app. It has taken them a bit of time to get things worked out but they really made a solid app.

I was fond of Google Messenger, until I discovered I couldn't "attach" anything from my Gallery (go to gallery from the paperclip screen and there's nothing there). Now it's back to searching for something....

I keep flip-flopping from Google Messenger, Hangouts, and Signal. I do hope that the new messaging service Google comes out with is encrypted.

What would you suggest for texting for my kids who have our old S4 phones on WiFi only (i.e. not included in our VZW phone plan)?

I set them up on Skype because that's what I use for work.

Is there anything else that will work via WiFi only?

    I MISS BBM!

I deleted it because no one used it... So sad. I think it's the best messaging app for cross-platform devices (/mostly? Has WP been added yet; or has nothing come of that... ?)/in general; but yeah... No one seems to listen!
It's funny I loved blackberry messenger. I downloaded loaded it just yesterday to see if I had any old friends on it. Nothing. No one at all uses it. Even the channels were completely empty they had created. I use Google messenger by the way.

Google Voice if you want them to have an actual (free) number. Otherwise, Skype should be fine.

I have installed Google Messenger app on my Android phone. It works best for texting anyone. I think this app is much better than Hangout.

It's really sad that so many people refuse to use it/have dropped it. It has a great UI and great potential...
