Now since carrier subsidies are pretty much a thing of the past which do u think gets you more bang for your buck around the $200-300 range? I know there's some decent midrange smartphones/tablets but not really sure how the CPUs/GPUs stack up at this range. Any advice?

I did look at that Tablet. I've read a lot of good, but that they do have more issues than established brands. Asus also seems to offer good midrange devices of both types. The trend seems to be towards midrange smartphones, and tablets, really low budget

How about a phablet? Like the xiaomi mi note 3 or the mi note 3 pro. Its good and solid for gaming, the battery is great. But from past xiaomi phones, they get hot fast. But Idk about the newer ones.
