Just found this story on my Google news feed and thought it was interesting. Is this an instance where they just can't give people with less then 4.4.4. any help at all, and does apple suffer from the same issues?

Yes, yes it does. Apple has more control over their updates because they are the sole manufacturer (a valid analogy would be Google and Nexus devices, not Google and every single Android phone out there), but Apple also limits how further back an OS update will go, so you won't see an iPod 4th gen or an older iPhone with the latest OS updates, and they also remove features from the OS to push their products (Siri, at one point) when updating older devices.

You can very well turn around the article if you take people still using older iDevices.
