Consider that in order to be daydream ready you need a very low latency display and the ability to consistently render two 60fps streams tells me that DayDream ready phones will also have great and consistent UI performance.

I think this is good for Android as a whole even if you don't buy a VR headset.

Just because a phone has class leading hardware does not instantly mean it will have fast software.

Indeed, OP, exciting times ahead! :D
What gets me is that the new Pixel phones are DayDream Ready, why aren't the LG V20 and Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge listed as DayDream ready, they have similar or even better hardware than the Pixel phones.

Yes, but DayDream requires both HW and SW to be done well.
