Seems like an okay option for those who can't stand cases, although it will need a tempered glass protector.

Concept that won't be available for purchase unfortunately. This is also the first I've head if this type of glass, had no idea it was used on sun roofs, and using it as an nd filter is absolutely genius.

I want nd filters in phones.

Definitely cool, but imagine how much it'd cost to replace the glass if it cracks. I'm guessing any crack would mess up the opacity feature.

It's interesting, but I couldn't watch more than a minute or so of the video because of the unnecessary and very annoying background music.

That would be cool. The question is, how good is it? The video showed the button labeled ND8, which leads me to think it's an 8 stop reduction of light. That's pretty good and would drastically help with some photography techniques. Unfortunately, they didn't show a comparison between off and on. The closest they came shows the activation of the filter within the camera app, the resulting exposure adjustments, but not the original exposure setting. Without knowing that, plus the automatic exposure adjustment that was made, I can't tell if it's really 8 stops or not.

Watching the video the shutter speed does change when the nd filter is enabled/disabled but I cannot see clearly by how much.

Either way I enjoy nd filters and would love to see one in my next phone so I don't need to use my clip on one.

Oh, definitely. But there will always be the person who insists on not using a case because they want to show off how cool the back glass looks. Then a little drop, and ooh, it ain't pretty no more.

Everyone drops their phone, no matter how careful. And specifically the S8 is one of Samsung's most breakable devices (all the cracked screen wail stories on the forums back in 2017...). Not having a decent case is a death sentence for glass back phones. Function over form, period. And the OnePlus 6 was also even more breakable.

The industry wants breakable phones.... the more phones break, the more new ones have to be bought. And sealed phones are also moneymakers... they can control the lifespan of the batteries to force people to upgrade sooner vs just buying a new battery for their otherwise good phone. We're being manipulated in ways we don't even know to get us to empty our wallets as fast as possible ;-)

I upgrade my devices on no particular schedule, only as needed and when I can actually afford it. But the thing is is that I also want old retired devices to remain usable for being repurposed and ready for retro reviews in 20 years or so

Those otterbox cases look disgusting and completely ruin the look of whatever phone they're slapped on

Disgusting?! They make the phone feel rugged, non-slippery, easier to grip... But yeah I guess I'm just a rugged-look lover.

I think they're horrible myself. They look and feel cheap, rubber is quick to stretch or discolor as well. They provide good protection, but I couldn't even imagine using one today with how big phones have gotten.

    Exactly.

The better option is a standard gel/TPU case which should do the job just fine without completely ruining the look of the phone.

I personally prefer to go as slim as possible.

If a brand like PEEL made ultra slim cases for my KEY2 and LE I would be all over them.

When you drop your $1000 glass phone down a flight of concrete parking garage stairs, or anything similar, and pick it up with that OtterBox case on it and it's undamaged and you go on your merry way, the case starts looking a whole lot better. You wouldn't get that same outcome with a thin tpu case.... but you would be out a $1000 phone ;-) My wife has a friend that went through several S9+'s in a short time, and was getting extremely stressed out until I suggested my wife buy her a girly style OtterBox case..... she hasn't broken her phone since ;-) and she loves the case :-D

I wouldn't buy a gigantic $1000 slab anyway lol but good point.

Still, OtterBox cases are too big and ugly, there are plenty in between those and ultra thin "peel" type cases

Quite frankly keeping your phone safe, regardless of price, is a priority over looks and that's how it should always be.
