I am a pretty huge fan of the Amazon Echo. I also have a first gen Dot in my home. We use it primarily for controlling lights (dim,on,off) and adding things to our shopping list. I was super excited about the $50 Dot and the new white color, which is more suited to our home. The dream of controlling your home from anywhere is pretty powerful. At less than $50 each if you buy 6, you can blanket your home. Then came Google Home. I don't need the speaker, but it's a bonus. What has me excited is the ability to control my Chromecast Audios. Years ago, I installed in-ceiling speakers in every room. The dream was to have Sonos everywhere. As much as I love Sonos, it's just too expensive to put everywhere. So over the past few years, I'd run down to my basement and switch wires if I wanted music outside, etc.

This year, I started looking at the Chromecast Audio and pairing with a small always-on amplifier. For $100 or so, I can control audio in a room. That's 1/5 the cost of Sonos. Google Home promises to allow me to say, "Play Music in Kitchen" and it'll target my kitchen Chromecast. That's incredible. So while I was super excited of having Dots everywhere in my house, I've decided to hold off and start my transition to Google Home. I hope it won't be long before Google has their version of the Dot.

I should also mention that Google Home looks incredible cool. So excited for this.

Awesome... to be honest, you sound like a perfect use case for what Google was getting at...

Integrating everything is a killer advantage they have.

You could compare the Android phone many of us carry as a portable "Google Home Dot". Of course it'd be nice to see them come out with something more directly comparable.

I qualify as always having my phone on me, but it's no replacement for a voice assistant like Alexa. Just this morning, I walked downstairs carrying my son and it's so convenient to ask Alexa to turn on the lights. My favorite command is, Alexa, kitchen 20. That will turn on the lights at 20 percent. I expect Google Home will do the same. If all goes well, I'll probably sell off my Echo and keep my Dot. Resale values will be minimal now that the new Dot is only $50.
