I am a pretty huge fan of the Amazon Echo. I also have a first gen Dot in my home. We use it primarily for controlling lights (dim,on,off) and adding things to our shopping list. I was super excited about the $50 Dot and the new white color, which is more suited to our home. The dream of controlling your home from anywhere is pretty powerful. At less than $50 each if you buy 6, you can blanket your home. Then came Google Home. I don't need the speaker, but it's a bonus. What has me excited is the ability to control my Chromecast Audios. Years ago, I installed in-ceiling speakers in every room. The dream was to have Sonos everywhere. As much as I love Sonos, it's just too expensive to put everywhere. So over the past few years, I'd run down to my basement and switch wires if I wanted music outside, etc.
This year, I started looking at the Chromecast Audio and pairing with a small always-on amplifier. For $100 or so, I can control audio in a room. That's 1/5 the cost of Sonos. Google Home promises to allow me to say, "Play Music in Kitchen" and it'll target my kitchen Chromecast. That's incredible. So while I was super excited of having Dots everywhere in my house, I've decided to hold off and start my transition to Google Home. I hope it won't be long before Google has their version of the Dot.
I should also mention that Google Home looks incredible cool. So excited for this.
