I am not 100% sure when this started to happen, but I do believe it was after the Lollipop update. I have tried clearing cache, data, uninstalling and reinstalling the apps as well as rebooting and I can sporadically get it to work for 1 movie or a few songs. Then it has the same issue again where the apps stop responding. Same with music.

Has anyone any idea how to resolve this? All my other media applications work i.e FIOS Mobile, MX Player, YouTube so I am sure this is specific to the 2 Google apps.

I'd appreciate some feedback and expertise here. Thanks.

I had the same thing. I eventually flashed a Lollipop based CyanogenMod nightly and it works perfectly. Amazing that CM can do Android better than Google Nexus...
