If I save a file to my nexus 4 will it show up on my tablet? I?m a newbie and was surprised when all my apps from my android tablet somehow got loaded in my phone automatically.

You will need an app and an account with box or dropbox or Google drive installed on both devices

Anything saved in the sharing folder on one device can be accessed on the other if online.
They also let you share with a PC.

like mentioned dropbox is probably your best bet for this type of thing. Gives you 2 GB of room which should be plenty

I use an app called DataSync and Dropbox to synchronize game progress between my N7 and N4. Pretty much automatic and works great!

If you have dropbox on both the Nexus 4 and the tablet then save the file to your dropbox folder on either yes it will sync. You can also sync to a laptop/desktop.
