Disable contacts (people) auto-sync?

On the Nexus 4 / Android 4.2, how do I disable contacts auto-syncing with my gmail account? Thanks.

Settings then under accounts select Google. Select your account then uncheck contacts.

Under both Email|Accounts and Google|Accounts (the same Gmail account, actually) I can see that "Sync is OFF". And yet, every time a add/edit a contact in the People app I get a warning that sync will run and indeed that contact is updated in my Gmail account. What am I missing? Thanks.

Try going into the people app then click on the three dots in the lower right corner and pick accounts. Then uncheck the box shown in the screen shot below

I'm having the very same issue. Auto sync is unticked but it still syncs contacts.

It also appears that it will upload every picture you take to your g+ account even if you have that feature turned off.
