A Little Sleuthing Leads Nexus 4 Enthusiasts To Estimate About 400K In Sales Of The Device | TechCrunch

How did they do it? They?ve taken the IMEI numbers of their phones and backtracked the production number of their devices using an LG mobile link that?s usually used for finding new firmware. An IMEI number, or International Mobile Station Equipment Identity number, is usually printed on the battery compartment of the inside of the phone. It can be used to prevent stolen phones from accessing a network.

If you take this link and put your IMEI number at the very end, this LG site will spit back out the IMEI followed by a long string of characters that looks something like this: ?LGE960 ACAGBK 212KPHG188745 20121206 GLOBAL/GLOBAL N N?

If you break this string apart, you get:
LGE960 = phone model
A = ?
CA = Country where the device was sold. (Others include ?US? for the U.S., ?HK? for Hong Kong, ?AU? for Australia and so on.)
G = Storage (G = 16GB, 8 = 8GB)
BK = Color
2 = ?
12 = Production Month (November)
K = Production Country (Korea)
PHG = ?
188745 = The line or production number, showing that phone was the 188,745th device made.

from poking at the serial number, they have found the following

October: 70,000 devices produced
November: 90,000
Dec: 210,000
January: ?

there is a good chance that January production number might be 500,000-600,000.

752,000 - 70,000 - 90,000 - 210,000 = 382,000 so far in January. And the month has about 10 more days to go.

T-Mobile online now has it in stock and been in stock for more than 10 hours now.

The physical stores have them in stock for a few days now.

So it will be a few more days before Google put it back up on Google play.

Wow, that was fast. The phone was out of the factory in Korea at 18 Jan, so it managed the whole shipping - customs - distribution chain in less than a week.

And someone said google is dragging their feet with distribution...

Jan 18 production: the 650986th device manufactured

Jan 22 production: the 750,000th device manufactured

Looks like Google is finished with US orders and is currently completing UK and CANADA orders.

Once finished with those Play Store should open up again.

T-Mobile USA online store has the Nexus 4 in stock for more than 24 hours now. Look like they got lot of supply. Physical stores also have many in stock. Which mean it is just a matter of time before Google Play will start selling again.

Delivered in 3-5 business days might even be possible.

T-Mobile USA has 2,000 stores + another 1100 partner stores.

Each store received around 14 units around January 22nd.

3,100 x 14 units = 43,400

The 820,000th device probably already have been produced. But it won't get into the customer hand until 15-20 days later so right around February 10th - February 15th. LG executive did say that the pressure will ease off sometimes in mid February.

We all know LG manufacturers phones. But is LG manufacturing enough of the Nexus 4 that has been sold out for 2 months now? There are those of us who don't have the Nexus 4 yet and waiting each day for the Google Play store to start selling it again. Also, the production # and rate tells us that they only produced 160,000 Nexus 4 in October and November combined. No wonder they ran out so quickly. And from the production #, we know that LG is ramping up production significantly. Much much more than they anticipated.

October: 70,000
November: 90,000
Dec: 210,000
January: (on track for 500,000+)

my thoughts exactly. if the site isnt prepared to deal with the traffic, they know will be coming...then google will still have failed miserably.

If they don't expect to sell 3-5 million devices just after launch I don't know what Google is thinking. Ramp up production and get ready to sell a boatload of phones, then release press clippings about how many phones you sold.

If the price for the Nexus 5 will also be $299/$349, I hope they produce LOTs because it will be even more popular than the Nexus 4.
