What they do for us? They provide a service. We "pay" for it by providing them data.

Not great money? It's the bulk of their business.

2012 Financial Tables

Yes bulk of their business and yes to the other commentor but a majority of the revenue wasnt from the android side but web based services. I forgot where I had read it whether it was forbes or one of these websites but revenue made by android broken down to each phone it was an low amount of profit being made. Which also ties into why google is now worried about samsung asking for more android revenue because their isnt much their to begin with.

Google makes their money from advertising. That advertising is in every aspect of their products. Android exists to collect user data, which then allows Google to advertise relevant products better.

Google is the biggest advertising company on the planet. All of those other side products and projects live to serve their advertising business. If those things stopped providing the data they need, or if privacy concerns narrow the available stream of data, Google would drop those projects faster than Microsoft dropped the Kin.

Every product that Google produces is supposed to provide revenue, most of the time indirectly. Android for example, Google doesn't make any money from it directly, it's open source and they pour a lot of money into development however gmail, maps, etc are licensed to the carriers and they make a lot of money via the play store with developer fees and from the ad network. My company has Google Business Apps which we pay for and it's a bargain compared to Exchange.

I beleive similar situations happend not only to Google, but for another compainies too. I think it is personal decision for everyone what company to choose.
If you are pissed off by Google - you can stop buying their products, android devices, and stop using google.com.

I wont be taking the OP's advice. I'm also not sure why they're sending anything from the USA to the UK when they operate from the UK too. I had to return my phone as the ear speaker wasn't working and within three days of talking to Google I had my replacement. So I personally can't fault their customer service.

I think what some of us are trying to say is you should be thankful if Google does anything for you at all with regards to this issue because it is in no way their responsibility to do so. This problem lies with the parcel service that got the box wet. Thats all man. Don't blame Google for sending you a wet phone. I'll bet my Nexus 4 that it wasnt wet when it left Google.

I had to exchange 3 Nexus 4's for various reasons before I finally got the 4th one that works great. Google was nothing but great through the whole process. (For anyone curious, the first one had the infamous buzz like most of them do. Should never have done the RMA because the second one had a dead pixel and the third one was DOA. haha)

the box was dry, it was the phone, when i pulled it out, it was ice cold and water was on the screen protector, the box was sealed, and who said i must have been outside, well i havent even stepped foot outside with it, it was as soon as it arrived it was wet in the sealed box,

i have now just spoke to them again, and they said ring tnt with the rma number, i just did, and they said they need the shipping address and the packaging they send with the shipping label, so i then rang google again, and they said they have excellated it again to there specialists, thats not the first time, i dont think they know what they are doing, and as i said, with the sales of goods act, i am well within my rights to return the product back, if u know the law, u would then know i am right,

I love Android Like Just about everyone here but the majority of this post has been nothing but blind fanboyism....."Google Does Everything for Free" "You Just Had Bad Luck" or My Favorite "cool Story Bro", the OP Comes in here looking to vent a little because he had a bad experience and Most of you throw it to the side, if it doesn't Agree with you then just hit that back button in the browser and read something else, as far as Your Situation Goes @jjp2701 I really hope they solve something for you, and if you have the specific Department you are looking to contact then try doing an internet search see if anything comes up and I personally love My Nexus 4 as much as my GS3 but see why this would Sour the Experience with Google but Just wait till you actually try out that phone. :)

I had to return my Nexus 4 (UK order) and to be fair with OP, I had to wait aaaages to get my shipping labels. It was not just about getting a label, but I also got a bag to put the phone in that could then be sealed and collected by the delivery company. This happened maybe in December, and now the charge for the replacement device is still pending on my google wallet account. And every time I was trying to inquire about why the pending charge is not removed from my google wallet account by replying to the customer support emails, I would get a new support team member saying, "sorry for the confusion, we're looking into this, etc...". And it can become very frustrating. So I agree, things are pretty messed up in Google's supply department. I'm just glad I managed to argue that they first send me the new Nexus 4 before I return mine! But other than that I'm totally in love with my Nexus 4!

This is a good point. To be honest, I'm guessing most people here who have experienced the google rma process have been dealing with google usa. It's quite possible that google uk are simply inept. Who knows?

OTA TV is free in the US but that doesn't mean NBC has no profit objective.
Actually, OTA TV is not "free." It's paid for. Taxpayers pay to maintain the airwaves through our government. Commercial entities want to reach customers over the publicly paid for air waves, and the terms are that they provide those services at no extra money from consumers. OTA TV is a public benefit. It is no more "free" than driving on the road is "free." You still have to pay for the road, just as a taxpayer.

Everyone read this until it sinks in...

I;m happy to trade the data Google gets from me for the services they offer. But I damn sure know that I'm just a dollar sign to them.
Looked at that way, Google is just a bunch for no cost services to you. What's good for the goose...

Point is, Google provides value to you and you to Google. Hence you willingly do what you do.

Are you serious right now? Google don't do anything for free. You make it seem like they are a non for profit charity that just wants to make the world a better place. I use Android and other Google services, but I am willing to accept the reality that Google doesn't give us anything.

Google only has one product and one type of customer. IF Google gives basically everything to us for free, than what does that make us? You betcha, we're Google's product. The only thing Google really makes money from is us. They make money from the data they collect from us. Google's customers are the advertisers. The people that pay Google money because Google has all of this information about us so they can better inject ads into our lives.

All of Google's products and services (including Android) only exist to collect our data and display ads. That is it. Google only updates Android and makes it better simply to get more people using it so they can collect more data and display more ads. Google doesn't give anything away to their real customers. Google's real customers pay up, and that's how Google makes the billions they make.

This is a rather dark and cynical view of Google's operations. It's also more or less true, but then every company sees the public as either customers willing to give them money (Apple), as something to be used to gain money (Google, Facebook), or both (Amazon and Microsoft). Sometimes the truth is kind of ugly.

I think you can do the right thing and make money for it; even being motivated by the money, if your actions are correct, how is that incorrect? I get not everyone would agree with the motivation, but if it is directly to the benefit of the consumers, I'm happy to push as many dollars as I can to the cause.
