Sliding Messaging Pro is a really good option. It's based off of the stock messaging app but with custom themes or you can even make your own. What makes it really good is all the options you have to tweak; from notifications to how the layout of the threads are. It's available for free on the Play Store but i highly reccommend picking up the pro version for $0.99 for more features.

what specific features are you looking for?

Ditto.

Sliding Messaging is good but not stable enough for everyday use. It's getting there though and has a great Holo interface and feature set without all the bloat of the following alternative.

GO SMS Pro is the most if not superior to Handcent but it has so many features that it takes a bit too much RAM for my personal liking.

Chomp SMS is another alternative I've tried, albeit briefly. Decent but haven't tested it in over a year.
