I can not connect have my Nexus 4 to my computer. It is recognized as a media device but it does not show up at my pc. I am using windows 8. it use to work before. I followed the steps you recommended but it comes up with this message:

windows found the driver but encounter a problem to install that. (code 28)

I used another nexus 4 and it came up with the same situation.

can you help me to fix this problem????

I am having the same issue just today. I am also on Windows 8. My Nexus shows that it is connected as a Media Device, but I cannot browse to it. Also, when I eject it, it is referred to as an ACER ADB interface. It worked 2 weeks ago, now something has gone haywire.

Thank you! That seemed to work, but I had to delete the ACER driver in order for it to stop reinstalling after I uninstalled it. Once I deleted the driver, my Nexus 4 now shows up in Windows Explorer.

Common Windows 7 issue that has nothing to do with Android (this time)

    Plug your phone in.
Find it in the device manager (look for the yellow triangle)
Right click, and choose "Update Driver Software ..."
Choose "Browse my computer for driver software"
Choose "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
Scroll down and pick "portable devices", click Next
Choose Standard MTP Device > MTP USB Device
When it warns you that things may go tits up, click yes anyway.
i did all that and it wont work .

i have the windows 8 and it said the driver was up to date but i can only access the camera not the media

That was great advice Jerry, but unfortunately it didn't quite work on my PC (and I really thought it was going to lol)

This is the error message code 10 which comes up. Any suggestions?

Settings > Storage > 3 dots at right top where 'USB computer connection' box will appear, click on it

    Check MTP option

Hi. I fund same problem with my nexus4 and nexus5, just enable USB share in settings.
    Settings>Wireless&Networks>More>Tethering&portable hotspots>USB tethering ON
Some reason its need to do every time, when I want to connect with my pc.
Maybe some update was wrong with android 5 or 6, or windows10.
