As of 2 days ago my Gmail has stopped pushing notifications. The sync works sometimes but not always. I have to manually check it and refresh it most of the time to get new emails to show. And yes notifications are turned on for the primary inbox.
Things I have tried:
-Restarting the phone
-signing out of my Google account and back in
-deleting the app updates for Gmail and reinstalling the updates
-removing my Gmail account on the phone and re adding it
-restarting the phone again

Nothing working on my N4. My N7 on the other hand is pushing Gmail notifications no problem.
Thanks for any help!

this happened to me before when i upgraded my OS to a new version. the only fix was a hard reset - a factory fresh reset and MANUAL resync reinstall one by one. it's a PIA but this fixed it for me both times.

did you update your OS to a new version? did you for some reason clear "Google Services Framework"? these both can cause you to lose PUSH.

good luck.

I was messing around with trying out the nexus 5 apks but never cleared the Google services framework that I recall. I am not quite following your steps. Are you talking about a factory reset to the entire phone and reinstalling all the apps? Thanks for your help!

yeah im saying do a hard reset to a factory fresh state. then DO NOT do a "restore" from a backup app. rather - do a manual resync and reinstall fresh from the fresh sources- Gmail and Play Store etc.. the reason i suggest this is you don't want to restore corrupted files! better to reinstall/ resync fresh. yes it's a PIA but you know it's clean.

Ok I understand. Thanks for your help. I just received a push from Gmail when my screen was on... Wtf. I will give it a day and see. If it isn't permanently back I will try your method. Thanks for your help. Much appreciated.

you're welcome. also - you can easily test it yourself by sending test emails from your yahoo email account on PC to your Gmail (phone). that's what i did.

good luck.

While nuking everything (i.e., system wipe, user data wipe, cache partition wipe, Dalvik cache wipe) will certainly solve almost all problems, I'm guessing the OP is hoping for something less drastic.

I would simply clear the data for the Gmail app and see if that fixes it. In the past when I use TB to restore apps, I find that if I restore data for certain apps, it sometimes messes up push notifications for that specific app. Eg, if I restore data to the FB app, I would no longer receive FB push notifications until I clear the app data.

If clearing the Gmail app data doesn't work, I'd try to remove your Google account and then add it back. Perhaps it's just a sync issue and if so, this would certainly clear things up.

Also, test the push notifications on WiFi vs over cellular network. It could very well be that nothing is wrong with your phone and it's just a network issue.

If all else fails, THEN go ahead and go with the nuke option.

Ya that is what I have been doing through Hangouts.

I'm seeing the same thing on my Nexus 5. Push/sync was working fine up until Saturday evening but since then it seems to update randomly (you have 8 new messages) or I have to update it myself. Going to try the clear data route but it doesn't seem to be limited to the OP.

I had this problem the first time I installed the N5 port (this was before the N4 factory image was released). Removing/re-adding my account fixed it then. Since then I have flashed N4 factory images and flashed the new N5 port and never had the problem again.

This started happening to me on my N5 yesterday. E.g mail would come through on my desktop but not to my phone. I went into gmail settings on phone, turned notifications off, rebooted phone, then turned them back on again and it has worked since.

PS: later edit: No it did not work. Has stopped once again. Will try deleting gmail data.

PS: later edit2: OK, deleting gmail data did not fix it. I then deleted and re-added my entire Google account (which is easier than it sounds) and the problem was fixed.

I'm new to Android but I'm experiencing this same problem. Can you please describe the simple process for deleting and re-adding a Google account? Thx

Go to Settings/Accounts/Google then click on your account then select "Remove Account" from the 3 dot options tab at the top right.

I'm currently live in Oman, recently for the last 2weeks I along with my friends and everyone in my office that use an android phone have stopped receiving notifications from majority of the applications on our phones. For eg. to receive an email on gmail we need to open the gmail application and refresh it to receive the email, Whatsapp too needs to stay opened to receive messages/notifications. This happens both over broadband wifi and mobile internet which is provided by Omantel and Ooredoo respectively. Most of the people don't even realise they aren't getting notifications. The internet to surf websites and youtube etc works fine.
My brother who is in Oman had the same problem on his Moto X, he recently went back to India on leave, received all his notifications without any problem.
If i use a VPN here (which is illegal to do) I receive all notifications/messages/emails together from all my apps and as long as the VPN is active everything works fine.
The apps i noticed that are affected are Amazon, fitbit, pushbullet, gmail, Outlook, fitbit, instagram, twitter etc (i need to open these apps to receive emails/notifications)
Apps that i get occasional notifications from are Exchange email, facebook, whatsapp(only if the app is opened)
Can anyone provide an insight to what might be wrong? I have tried talking to a customer care representative from both services but all I get is that everything is fine from their side. They have no idea what I'm talking about.
in Oman we have skype, viber, whatsapp voice calling, porn sites and other voip related services blocked, could this have affected in anyway? the problem started just 2weeks back thou and it is frustrating

You're right same problem with me, guess some location issue by google with Oman or omantel or ooredoo connection. Couldn't figure out. I have to manually open gmail app and refresh, i am looking for some tasker to refresh it every 6 min.

Try the Force Gmail Sync app from the Play Store - it sits in the background and forces the Gmail app to get new mail at regular intervals.

I use this app because it simulates a manual sync (just like manually refreshing the Inbox) and all my new email notifications come through. I haven't had any luck with other apps that just seem to mess around with the built-in sync settings.

THANK YOU! I've been missing important emails for 2 weeks since I got my new phone and after I cleared the data on Gmail and re synced it seems to be working! :D
