How to know if my phone is secure

Once in awhile I use an Android device for a month or two. I like to remain knowledgeable on the different mobile OSes. I bought a Nexus 4 on Ebay. Since I'm not an Android user I don't know much about the OS. Is there any way that the person I bought the device from would be able to load up an altered OS with a keylogger or malware? I just want to know before I load up things like 1Password and my Blockchain wallet. I really don't want to wipe the phone I spent almost a day upgrading from 4.3 to 5.1.

I don't do forums well lol. Thanks for answering. I thought it would load the original OS. Just to be clear since I'm new to the OS. I go to Settings, Backup and Reset, Factory Data Reset?

Yes, that will do it. :)

I'll just link a couple of Ambassador guides that may help. This one will ensure that you don't lose your texts:

This may help with the Reset itself:
